HOW DOES MERCURY FIGHT SALTWATER CORROSION?
Mercury 4-stroke portable outboards feature a six-part system to fight the effects of saltwater corrosion, beginning with the use of marine-grade aluminum alloy for all metal castings. A thorough chemical conversion treatment prepares the casting ensuring superior adhesion of surface coatings. Then a zinc chromate primer undercoating is applied, followed by an acrylic high solid paint coating and finish coating. Finally, a durable acrylic resin overcoat is applied. Mercury's unique casting and finishing process protects your outboard and effectively seals out saltwater.
Mercury outboards also feature sacrificial zinc anodes that are strategically placed internally and externally to fight corrosion and preserve overall engine integrity. Internal water passages are zinc coated for additional protection. Additionally, use of specialized marine-grade stainless steel for key components ensures superior corrosion protection in even the harshest marine environments.
